SYNOPSIS

Toronto International Film Festival 2009
Best Debut Director / Polish Film Festival 2009

 Synopsis
Shopping Malls are the contemporary temples of consumerism, colorful shop windows, shiny jewelry, expensive cosmetics, and the newest fashion. Here Milena and her friends spend their free time. Rich men who give them presents pay for their shopping - sometimes it is only pink headband. Shortly, a new girl - delicate and sensitive Alicja, joins the class group. At first she feels alienated, but soon she becomes one of them. Alicja and Milena start to bond and there is an affectionate relationship between them. At the same time Michal/, Alicja¡¯s peer, falls in love with her. He becomes a rival for Milena.

Program Note
Mall Girls starts with an elevator running in a glitzy shopping mall. Inside the elevator, Milena and other girls are talking. A shopping mall is a place where city girls are tempted by consumption to hang around. Milena and her friends live with the fashionable clothes, shoes and accessories in the mall. It is also the place where they start sexual relations. This film tells about what shopping malls would mean to girls these days. It also casts an eye on the Polish society being driven by the enormous stream of consumerism. The electronic displays, commercial flyers, and spectacular show windows in the city compose the desire of the girls. They recognize each other via their clothes or cell phone brands. Alicja, who recently moved in, has an old cell phone and is being snubbed by the other girls. So she steps into the new world of Melina, and pursues inappropriate sexual trades through her new fancy cell phone. Mall Girls talks about the low class Polish girls who wander around shopping malls, clubs, sexual relations and trades in the spectacular consumeris/m-oriented society. At the same time, it also tells the stories of girls as they grow up amid peer culture, sexual relations, obsessions, and family troubles. First time director Kasia Ros©©aniec takes a calm and realistic look at the lives of Polish girls without any fantasy or rhetoric. (KWON Eun-sun)
