Toronto International Film Festival 2009
Best Screenplay / San Sebastián International Film Festival 2009
Synopsis
During the course of one day and night, seven children wander the streets in an urban odyssey. But not all of them will find their way home. Dawn breaks and it¡¯s the same day but now we experience the journey from their mothers¡¯ viewpoint.
Program Note
This movie starts with the shot of 7 sleeping children. They don¡¯t go to school. They wander around the street for many reasons. Daniel left home in anger because his mother falsely accused him of stealing money. Stacey and Orton have been spending many days on the street. When Stacey gets her first period, her brother Orton is completely lost. Best friends Christina and Trisha get arrested for shoplifting. Trisha¡¯s brother Roo goes through a humiliating audition for porn. Their hard day comes to an end. The diegesis moves to their mothers. Now it¡¯s their turn to live the same day as their children did. The mothers don¡¯t get the protection and comfort that they need either. Their lives are at risk. Just like piecing a jigsaw puzzle together, what is missing in the children¡¯s diegesis resurfaces. The characters and the spaces intersect with one another and travel back and forth through time. Just an ordinary night can be a special moment to some but a painful memory to others. All these factors fuel Blessed to rush to the dramatic tension. The theme music ties the frail souls in Melbourne together and brings the powerful resonance to the heartbreaking ending. With a tight plotline and a camera narrative to support it, Blessed contemplates on the lives of the mothers and the children living on the fringe. (KWON Eun-sun)
