Synopsis
While Christer is down in the basement laundry room, he suddenly remembered he\'s got his house rent money in the shirt pocket. In an attempt to save the money, he disconnects the main fuse in order to stop the washing machine. As the caretaker puts in a new fuse, an old man is fumbling with the fuses in a fuse box upstairs and dies instantly. His daughter, Leni is now alone for the first time in her life. As the fresh mother Heidi is in the laundry room to get her laundry, she discovers that the machines have stopped. She is in a hurry, and has to bring with her the wet clothes. Without being aware of it, Christer has set unavoidable processes in motion.
Program Note
One cold morning, a little unexpected deed shakes up someone else¡¯s life. Christer puts his shirt in the washer with money in it by accident. In an attempt to save the money, startled Christer rushes to turn it of. However, he ends up shutting off the electricity for the entire building. As a result, the elderly man living upstairs dies and Haidi realizes how unhappy her marriage is. Leni is thrown out to the street after the death of her father, Christer is evicted because of overdue rent and Heidi is living in an anxiety thanks to her abusive husband. None of them have got place for their own. Cold Lunch is consisted of a prologue and 6 small chapters. This is multi-plot drama that revolves around the stories of Leni, Christer and Haidi living in the same neighborhood of Oslo. There is no common conclusion among all the episodes. They are just loosely connected by one theme music and straplines; however, these loosely connected episodes slowly add on to each other and eventually leave deep aftertaste. Cold Lunch depicts the people who are suffering from acute loneliness caused by rugged individualism. Individualism cannot be sustained even with social welfare and cutting edge technology. The loopholes of the life based on individualism are revealed by the attack of nature and unexpected. In the middle of the film, a modern downtown restaurant is attacked by a flock of birds that appear suddenly. That is the eerie representation of horror of the real. Nevertheless, the director leaves little room for hope to Leni. She gets the new chance through her old fashion sandwiches and puts on a very hip red bikini and goes to the beach by herself.
