Roseanne LIANG
Synopsis
The audition room is a minefield for three Asian actresses who are expected to be Asian in ways they¡¯re not completely comfortable with. When the humiliations mount, they transcend their professional rivalry in one gleeful act of solidarity, empowering themselves with the very stereotypes that they¡¯ve been subjected to.
Program Note
Melanie, Kaylee and Lisa are born and raised in New Zealand, but whenever they go to an audition, their looks become their nationalities. The directors want them to make the most of their ¡®Asian¡¯ appearance. But, the so-called ¡®Asianness¡¯ they want from them is Asian women as sexualized objects, Asians with ridiculous accent, or ninjas doing clumsy Kung Fu. The film cleverly shows the different but the same situations that the three women of Asian origins are in; it shows their audition clips at the same time by dividing the picture frame into three. It is hilarious and almost thrilling to see that the three women intentionally make fun of the images of ¡®Asian woman¡¯ which they are forced to portray at an audition. (PARK Seojin)
