Program Note
Carla runs away from home to study fashion design in Lyon, but her purse and luggage get stolen in a train on the first day. Having no place to stay, she spends one night in the house of Rico, whom she happens to meet on the street. Rico brings Carla to the construction site where an old ship is renovated into a bar, and Carla meets Lucie working there. The two women become closer; their relationship verges on love until they find that Carla is pregnant with Rico¡¯s baby. They strive to manage the situation, in absolute poverty. Dealing with the issues of labor, poverty, and social welfare, this film goes beyond the sweet romance story of lesbian sexuality or coming-out. It looks deep into the various aspects of the lives of lesbians, which are strongly affected by the society they live in. (Jay SOHN)
