Synopsis
Diana has down-syndrome and Cathy suffers cerebral paralysis. They met in labor center thirty years ago and have managed their independent lives taking care of each other ever since. As time passes, however, they are challenged by double disadvantages of being old and disabled, but they keep rising onto their feet against all these ordeals, as they have done for the last thirty years together.
Program Note
Diana has Downs-Syndrome and Cathy suffers from Cerebral Palsy. They met at a vocational workshop for the disabled thirty years ago and have managed their own independent lives, taking care of each other. As time passes, however, they can¡¯t help being challenged by the additional disadvantages of being old and disabled, and society further disappoints them by forcing restrictive regulations on them. But they once again stand up to these challenges, in hopes of making a better society, just as they have been doing, as companions together, for the last thirty years. An increasingly aging society runs in tandem with a disabled seniors population. Despite the fact that the issue of the welfare of handicapped persons is prominent, society does not fully pay attention to aged, disabled persons who suffer from the double disadvantages. Body and Soul is also remarkable, in that it looks at a unique female friendship and the issues of aging and disability. (Jay SOHN)
