SYNOPSIS
The French filmmaker Gaëlle Denis, whose previous work Fish Never Sleep (2002) was also screened at WFFIS, moves her cinematic landscape from Japan to England in this film. Like her previous film, her protagonist is a Japanese woman, this time living alone in the big city of London. Denis’ time as an exchange student at Kyoto University of the Arts infuses her portrayal of the complex emotions of life as a foreigner with firsthand experience. In a global era when the stage can travel from Asia to Europe, the female perspective emerges in a combination of live action and animation images that are digitalized to create a dreamlike presence. Gaëlle Denis studied Media Art at Kyoto University and Animation at Royal College of Arts. She made her first short Emma in 1999. Her filmography also includes Chow a dada? (2000), Abubacar and the Afrodisiac (2001) and Fish Never Sleep (2002).
