SYNOPSIS

In African-diasporic America where numerous terms used to describe race and sexuality emerge and then vanish, the word ¡®Butch¡¯ has multiple meanings in different contexts, more than just a tomboy girl image. In this documentary, butch, which originally referred to male roughness, represents black lesbians who are often mistaken for men. Within this new meaning of ¡®butch¡¯ is contained sexist, racist discrimination¡¦ how do black women respond and react to it? Butch Mystique is a documentary that brings together stories about the lives of women who are mothers, activists, artists, and of course, butches.
