SYNOPSIS
This documentary comprises of several candid interviews of actresses who struggle, unsupported, against a prejudice of being old. Searching the film star Debra Winger, who retired in her early 40s to become a recluse, the film illustrates the bitter reality that actresses who have ¡°reached that certain age¡± can no longer exist as an independent character and sink to roles as a mother, the ¡°other woman,¡± and the ¡°hero¡¯s girlfriend¡± roles - even if she is attractive. The director, Rosanna Arquette is acknowledged as an actress of rare depth and scope and has appeared in the films Le Grand Bleu, New York Stories, Desperately Seeking Susan etc. The film presents candid interviews with various actresses, such as Jane Fonda, Whoopi Goldberg, Vanessa Redgrave, Holly Hunter, Sharon Stone, Gwyneth Paltrow, Meg Ryan, Diane Lane. They touch on diverse topics such as temptations and difficulties, the maintaining of a balance between a private life and a successful actress¡¯s life that they have to confront with in order to survive in the entertainment business. This refreshing film incisively traces the trials and tribulations of actresses who try to maintain their self-respect as women, and self-esteem as actresses in a Hollywood where they are measured not by their acting, but by their looks, youth and sex appeal.
