SYNOPSIS
This documentary is a brief description and affectionate homage for a female film master who never stops filmmaking for about half-century with her strong will and overwhelming creativity.
Crossing identification and estrangement, intimacy and objectification, Journey: Portrait of Věra Chytilová makes a dialectic configuration of a female artist’s life. Watching closely her daily activity and psychological states, camera does deeper exploration of Chytilová Repetitive sound without any comment and film form articulated only by rhythms of editing achieves critical estrangement, through Chytilová intervention in self-representation and its reconstruction.
As a result, Chytilová in this film appears with her seemingly haughty self-confidence and self-respect on her life and lifetime career, but she still shows her pathos and sense of futility staying in the other side of her passionate life. Věra CHYTILOVÁVěra CHYTILOVÁ
Director and screenplay writer, born in Ostrava in 1929. From the beginning of her career, Věra CHYTILOVÁ’s works were daring and original. Her talent to observe ordinary, everyday things in an unconventional way and from unexpected angles, made her different from the general run of film directors. Her major works include A Bagful of Fleas, Something Different, Pearls of the Deep, Fruit of Paradise and The Apple Game, which were screened and awarded at a number of festivals. Věra CHYTILOVÁ is the one of the representative figures in Czech film and is also known as the leader of the ‘Czech New Wave’ of the sixties.
