SYNOPSIS
This film tells the story of how a family helps each other heal their wounds after being torn apart by domestic sexual abuse.
Agnes, who lives in Toronto, decides to go home when she receives the news that her mother Rose is in critical condition. After running away at the age of 17, Agnes for the first time returns to her hometown where she meets her older sister Theresa who obsesses over her cheating ex-husband, and her autistic younger sister Louise who spends her entire time watching TV. Instead of welcoming their long lost sister, Theresa and Louise feel threatened by Agnes’ appearance for fear of her digging up old skeletons in the closet which they clearly manifest when Agnes chooses to stay at home to nurse their sick mother. Nonetheless, Agnes manages to win her sisters’ heart with her good-natured humor and consideration. When her mother passes away, Agnes, for the first time in 15 years, finally attempts to reconcile with the past she tried so hard to escape from by facing the father who had raped her and reunite with her daughter Joanie whom she gave up for adoption. And through this process Agnes is transformed from a weak and wounded little girl into a strong and independent woman.
The superb direction and acting, especially the performance from Molly Parker who plays Agnes is truly a treat. (Lim Sung-min)

Wiebke von Carolsfeld was born in Germany. After her graduation from college, she moved to Canada, where she worked as film editor and made two award-winning short films, From Morning on I Waited Yesterday(1998) and Spiral Bound(2000), which were screened at many International Film Festivals in America and Europe. Marion Bridge is her first feature film and won the Best Canadian First Feature Film at Toronto International Film Festival 2002.
