SYNOPSIS
Showa Shinzan shot in the traditional Japanese puppet theater called Bunraku, is based on the volcanic eruption of Mt. Usu in Hokkaido during the Pacific War. Through this true event, the film testifies to history’s exploitation of the people by state power and its representatives. That power assemblage justified war in the name of national interest when in fact they were ignorant to imminent threat and used the State as a means to manipulate the people. Unfortunately, history repeats itself. (Kim Joon-yang)

A Japanese-Canadian born in Belleville, Ontario, Alison Reiko Loader studied animation at Concordia University, majoring in Studio Art and Art history. After graduation in 1991, she worked in desktop publishing and pre-press production for several years and worked at an advertising firm, creating animated spots for LED billboards. In 1997 Alison left Montreal to work in Japan, creating photo-realistic computer-generated artwork and animation for Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn games. She currently lives in Montreal and teaches animation.
