SYNOPSIS
Carolina is the latest film from Marleen Gorris, whose Antonia¡¯s Line showed a vision of the feminist community. This time, she worked with many of Hollywood¡¯s outstanding actors, including Shirley MacLaine and Julia Stiles. Even though the film follows the conventional Hollywood romance¡¯s narrative demands, Gorris gives a feminist twist to this narrative ruled by the patriarchy.
Carolina Mirabeau is young and beautiful single woman in her twenties. She grew up with two unique younger sisters under the eye of their eccentric grandmother. Her always drunk, drifting father brought the sisters to her one by one in a basket and left. These girls who have different mothers are far from ideals of patriarchic monogamy. Carolina cares for her family but doesn¡¯t want to be part of this tradition. Working as the audience coordinator for a TV dating program in the big city, Carolina dreams of ¡®normal¡¯ marriage. Albert, next door, is her best friend, and they share each other¡¯s secrets and burdens. Albert is the writer of a series of romance novels published under the pseudonym Daphne St Clair. Enter into the picture, Mr. Perfect, for whom Caroline is seemingly waiting. But his arrival causes a quake in Carolina and Albert¡¯s friendship.
The real heroine in this film is definitely Carolina¡¯s grandmother, whose character embodies the director¡¯s vision for a feminine world teeming with self-regulation, wisdom, consideration and trust.
