SYNOPSIS
Mao¡¯s words, that women make up one half of the sky, was a rallying point for Korean feminists in the 1980s. Béinéedicte Liénard asserts that if that is so, each individual woman is a piece of the sky. For director Liénard, cinema is a method of telling others who ¡°we¡± are, and provides satisfaction and simple happiness from doing so. Cinema is a power that allows one to speak on behalf of others without dictatorial control. A Piece of Sky presents the feminist politics by director Liénard who stresses the dignity of every individual woman.
A Piece Of Sky is a story about the ¡®resistance¡¯ of women prisoners and factory workers. How often can women say ¡°No?¡± What consequences do they have to face upon saying ¡°No?¡± Joanna, who is weak and helpless in the early stages of the film, gradually realizes that she needs to find her inner power, and to have faith and respect in herself. Claudine, at one time a close friend of Joanna, is asked to give testimony at Joanna¡¯s trial by her attorney. By testifying, Claudine has to speak against the labor union she belongs to. Though she fears confrontation with the union, Claudine finally decides to testify for Joanna and stand against the union with other factory workers.
In A Piece Of Sky director Béinéedicte Liénard brings to light the inner power and dignity of women prisoners and factory workers. By deliberately juxtaposing factory with prison, and the personal with the political, the film shatters our prior existing notions of all. (Kim Eun-shil)
