SYNOPSIS

These five short videos introduce Judy, a paper mache puppet who ruminates on her position in society. Like Judy, of the famous Punch and Judy puppet duo, Benning’s Judy seems to experience the world from the outside, letting things happen to her rather than making things happen around her.

Born in 1973 in Wisconsin. Sadie Benning is a lesbian video artist who has created provocative work since she was 15 years old using a Pixelvision toy camera. Many of her video pieces are coming of age stories about her own experiences and longings as a young lesbian teenager. Evoking in turn playful seduction and painful honesty, Benning’s floating, close-up camera functions as her intimate revelations and definition of evocative experimental form. Her filmography includes Me & Rubyfruit (1989), Living Inside (1989), Jollies (1990), A Place Called Lovely (1991), It Wasn’t Love (1992), German Song (1995) and For Baby (2000).
