SYNOPSIS
Between the Lines features the work of 15 Asian-American women poets currently working in the USA. Focusing on issues such as immigration, language, family, memory, inspiration and so on, these women poets evoke rare insights into immigration, Asian-American identity and women’s writing through their poetry. Seeing and hearing their voices and performances, we come to recognize that one name, ‘Asian women’, cannot describe the women’s diverse lives and art.
The camera at times just watches them by their side, and at other times takes an active role in their stories, overlapping and cutting away the women poets’ images, and drawing out the voices of women buried between the lines of an American immigration history. Director Hong is a major visual poet herself, interweaving the images exquisitely between the experimental and the documentary style.

Yunah HongYunah Hong
Yunah Hong was born in Seoul, Korea in 1962. She graduated from Seoul National University in 1985 with a B.F.A. in Applied Arts and from New York Institute of Technology in 1987 with a M.A. in Communication Arts. She has produced and directed shorts and documentaries including Memory/all echo(1990), Here Now(1995) and Becoming an Actress in New York(2000).
