Chutney Popcorn is a romantic comedy on the conflicts between lesbian subculture in New York, family and maternity. The problems of sexual identity and family are always interwoven with the problems of racial and cultural difference.
 Reena is a lesbian photographer and tattoo artist who has managed a steady relationship with Lisa. She draws Indian tattoos for her lesbian friends in an attempt to acknowledge the cultural differences within the lesbian community and also to mediate the different cultures. However, her mother, who obeys the traditional moral values and norms of Indian culture, refuses to accept her daughter’s sexual identity. But the real trouble is caused when Reena decides to become a surrogate mother, through artificial fertilization, for her sterile sister. Are the lesbian subculture and maternity or parenthood compatible? Can Reena’s conservative mother and sister accept her decision? Reena’s pregnancy causes a battle between East and West, between different ideologies, values, groups, and forces around sexual identity. Director Nisha Ganatra, who also played the lead role, cheerfully deals with these complicated problems with witty dialogues and sophisticated drama. (Kwon Eun-sun)
