SYNOPSIS

A short film by Chantal Akerman, a feminist director known for the most innovative and relentless practice. Compared with her previous films, especially those which work with an extreme deconstruction of the narrative, visual experiments and radical messages subverting heterosexuality, the black and white I¡¯m Hungry, I¡¯m Cold is lighter, much more comprehensible, humorous and rhythmic. Two young Belgian girls run away from home in Brussels. They chain smoke and say, ¡°I¡¯m hungry, I¡¯m cold¡± again and again, which stands as a direct metaphor for the general situation and state of runaway girls with nothing in a society. The poor girls, however, lead life in their own way. The film lets us keep a distance from the precocious and lovely runaway girls¡¯ harsh situations through highly stylized gesture and vocalization, and elliptical editing. (Kwon Eun-sun)
