SYNOPSIS
This evocative, vivid and visually intense documentary film is about incestuous sexual abuse of the South Asian girl child. The film arises from the producer, Grace Poore\'s, own story. Poore has constantly written about and challenged ¡®incestuous sexual abuse of the South Asian girl child¡¯ for many years. Thus, it can be said that The Children We Sacrifice is produced as the extension and result of her constant work.
Sexual abuse of children is widespread throughout cultures and ethnic groups, and includes the abuse of boy children. Nevertheless, South Asian patriarchal cultural and religious peculiarities have a close relationship with the incestuous sexual abuse of the South Asian girl child and it is necessary to stand against and overcome South Asian silence and myth with regard to it. That is why the film especially focuses on the issue of incestuous sexual abuse of ¡®the South Asian girl child.¡¯
Since South Asian patriarchy has imposed upon a girl child the duty of the eldest daughter and of absolute obedience to the father, as an object of sexual abuse a woman is forced to keep silent. This causes psychological trauma and threatens their lives. Poore emphasizes the possibility of survival by expressing their experience, making it public and recognizing a social structure and system oppressing women. That is the reason why women who have experienced incestuous sexual abuse are called not victims but survivors. (Kwon Eun-sun)
