SYNOPSIS
How would Jane Austen¡¯s novel unfold if re-interpreted by a woman director? Patricia Rozema tries her hand at Mansfield Park, set in 19th century British society, endowing vivacious, strong independence to a female lead who is conflicted between marriage and social status. This cheerful satire, a trademark of Austen¡¯s, meets with Rozema¡¯s creativeness resulting in enhanced cinematic enjoyment.
Fanny Price is sent to wealthy relatives, away from the life of austerity at home. She pours her keen intelligence and repressed sensibility into writing, filling pages of her diaries and other written works and sharing them with her friend Edmund. Fanny grows into an attractive woman full of vigor. Her social status escalates suddenly when Henry, an object of desire among socialites, proposes to her. All of a sudden, the elite social circle recognizes Fanny and soon her conduct, faithful to her own emotion and judgement, drives the Mansfield household filled with adultery and betrayal into a truth-revealing whirlpool.
