SYNOPSIS

13-year-old Soo-ah has a secret that she cannot tell anyone. She is living with her ¡°mother,¡± a restaurant worker, but she knows that her real mother is somewhere out there. Actually, her real mother is high-class singer Youn Seolyoung who is the opposite of her mother in every sense. Bearing her secret, Soo-ah decides to go to Seoul to find her real mother. A photo of her father is her only companion on her trip. For Soo-ah, with her adolescence spent without a father, lonesome days, difficulty having a loving relationship with family and friends, and poverty, it is in longing for her dead father that she finds shelter. Soon, this longing develops into her fantasy that Youn Seol-young is her mother, which is loosely based on a story from her father¡¯s diary. Hidden from the story\'s surface, the film explores the dynamics of the father-daughter relationship. Even when Sooah overcomes the illusion of her ¡®real mother¡¯, she cannot be free from about the effects of her father\'s absence. The Wonder Years delicately captures the innocent mind of a teen girl who tries to solve the riddles of life and lives bitter sweet days learning to stand on her own two feet. The film was completed by help of Residence in Paris, a supporting program of Cannes Film Festival for young filmmakers. (Jay SOHN)
