Local Women’s Film Festival Network Conference

At the SIWFF 2019, activists from 14 local women’s film festivals?including those in Seoul, Incheon, Daegu, Gwangju, and Jeju-officially launched the Local Women’s Film Festival Network. Their mission is to discover and promote female filmmakers across South Korea under the banner of “Women’s Film Festival,” to discuss films addressing social issues from a female perspective, and to contribute to spreading a culture of gender equality in society. Transcending regional boundaries, the network fosters solidarity and mutual growth based on trust, holds an annual conference.

SIWFF Night: Women in Films is a networking event that brings together women filmmakers from Korea and abroad to foster solidarity and friendship. Special Screening: Amnesty International Korea - Strange Beings on a Midsummer Night

These so-called “young” women experience layered forms of oppression-ranging from widespread gender-based discrimination and violence to ageism. They act on what they believe is right, resist hate, and challenge the use of identity as a basis for exclusion. In response, some label us as “strange” or “odd.” Yet this film screening and discussion speaks to those who are like us, with a message: “There are many people like you; there are many of us!”

Special Screening: ida: Environment and Life Culture Foundation - Sanctuary Cinema

This film screening and discussion features films supported by ida: Environment and Life Culture Foundation and offers an opportunity to reflect on the rights and habitats of non-human animals and other living beings. In Flower Cow, five lives are rescued before slaughter and given new homes as recognized “living beings.” Urban Wildlife: Caged in Cafés shows urban wildlife forced to leave “wildlife cafes” after the Wildlife Protection Act revision. Flat Land follows aquarium flounders dreaming of the deep sea. Searching for a Home portrays a day at a farm animal sanctuary.
