Synopsis

Moonsook is in her mid-forties. Rather than artistic inspiration, her days begin with piles of laundry and an endless sequence of household chores. Once an aspiring filmmaker studying cinema, she has now been away from her career for twelve years, due to the intense, hands-on parenting that began after childbirth. One day, amid the repetition of her lethargic routine, an old piano brought from her childhood home is placed in the center of her living room, and time, which had felt frozen, slowly begins to move again.

As her current daily life intersects with the parenting records she has kept over the past twelve years, her original compositions and classical piano melodies fill the air, leading to the unexpected discovery of her daughter¡¯s talent. An afternoon that once felt colorless gradually regains its hue through music, and the film that had been put on hold prepares to start anew.

Piano in the Afternoon is an autobiographical essay about a woman rewriting her time after a career break through music and humor.

Director's Statement

When the film festival was over, I had set down my camera. Like many women artists, I too entered the long stretch of child-rearing and breadwinning. During that time, I recorded my daily life and began to play the piano. Now, as I try to return to art, I ask myself: "Can aged film girls still make films?" This is my note of greeting to the peers who have each paused, standing still in their own places.
