JANG Yunmi
As of June 2026, Miari Texas—once the largest red-light district in Korea—is being demolished. A prevailing social gaze regards such red-light districts simply as things that ought to disappear, places whose disappearance would be no loss. Emboldened by that gaze, redevelopment is busily replacing the city's landscape with things like new towns and high-rise residential-commercial complexes. Most redevelopment reinforces inequality and makes the vulnerable even more vulnerable. I wanted to tell the story of a particular place that can never be spoken of carelessly. And I was curious about the women who would remain in that place until the very end. I was lucky enough to meet them, the fighting women who had lived out their own lives.
Beginning with His Mind (2013), Jang Yunmi has made four feature films and five short films. Under Construction (2018) won the Best Korean Documentary Award at the 10th DMZ Intl. Documentary Film Festival, while Flag, Blue Sky, Party(2019) received the Park Nam-ok Award at the 23rd SIWFF.
