Synopsis
S7 Girls' Hostel (Red door on the right) is the quiet reflection of a wandering filmmaker at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. She uses dreamy archival material from 2016-2020, particularly of her hostel room at the institute, to remember a space that changed her in tiny, spectacular ways.
Director's Statement
When I was asked to make a ¡°video impression¡± of my time at India¡¯s largest state-funded film institute, I was excited yet daunted by the prospect of going through all the recorded material from what were both the best and worst four years of my life. I began by sifting through photographs, videos, documents, classroom exercises, films, and notebooks, with special focus on the girls¡¯ hostel. I realized that my life at FTII had been carefully documented, and this film would be a meaningful way to begin processing what I¡¯d experienced. I enjoy working with bits of found material, and the diary/essay film holds a special place in my practice. My thoughts aligned beautifully with the essence of A Room of Our Own, and I felt compelled to archive a sliver of my story—alongside other forgotten or erased histories from a gendered space.
