Synopsis

The film is a feature-length documentary that follows the only women on the Afghan government negotiating team as they work toward peace and broker a shared political structure with the Taliban. After decades of conflict, the population may accept peace at any cost, but women refuse any deal that sacrifices their hard-won equality. In this complex situation with many stakeholders, the only way to achieve peace is with everyone at the table.

Director's Statement

"As a filmmaker, I believe in the power of storytelling to illuminate the complexities of the human experience and amplify the voices of those whose stories have been marginalized or silenced by the ravages of war and politics. In my home country of Afghanistan, telling these stories is often a matter of life and death.
When I decided to make this documentary, I envisioned myself standing with my camera against the Taliban. I could see myself facing the men who, 20 years ago, prevented me and millions of other girls from going to school—shackling my feet and silencing my voice in the process. In The Sharp Edge of Peace, we delve into the profound and often overlooked perspectives of Afghan women amidst the tumultuous landscape of peace and politics.
Against the backdrop of decades-long conflict, our documentary illuminates the journeys of four Afghan female peace negotiators, whose resilience and determination defy all odds—Fawzia Koofi, Fatima Gailani, Habiba Sarabi, and Sharifa Zurmati represent the perspective of Afghan women in this story.
In the shadow of uncertainty and danger, our team embarked on a mission to capture the raw emotions and unfiltered truths of those living in the aftermath of this conflict—particularly four of the women risking their lives to bring about real and lasting change. A visual history that will shake any dormant conscience, this film is a testament to the transformative strength of those women who refuse to be silenced in the face of adversity. Through their stories and enduring quest for justice and equality, we are reminded of the true power of perseverance.
Ultimately, this film is a testament to the transformative power of women. In a world increasingly defined by war and violence, I believe that this film will inspire audiences to join the women of Afghanistan on this journey for justice, for rights, for real peace, and for freedom.
In a world besieged by conflict and discord, our film serves as a powerful reminder of our shared humanity and the possibility of a brighter tomorrow. The Sharp Edge of Peace is not only a reflection of women's voices but also a call to action, compelling us to reflect on our own roles in shaping the future of humanity."
