Synopsis

First graders in a Tokyo public elementary school face a final semester challenge: performing "Ode to Joy" at the ceremony for new first graders. Ayame, who struggles to keep up, is determined to play the big drum. We follow her through auditions filled with setbacks and victories. To prepare, she must quickly learn to handle pressure and responsibility. The film explores how the Japanese educational system balances self-sacrifice and personal growth while preparing the next generation to join society.

    Ema Ryan Yamazaki is an Oscar-nominated Japanese documentary filmmaker. Her feature film, The Making of a Japanese (2023), won the Special Jury Prize at the EBS International Documentary Festival and became a box office success in Japan. Its companion short, Instruments of a Beating Heart, was nominated for Best Documentary Short at the Academy Awards. Her previous works include Money Business: The Adventures of Curious George's Creators (2017) and Koshien: Japan's Field of Dreams (2019).
