Synopsis
Growing up in war-torn Mogadishu, Somalia, all young Samia wants is to run. Despite threats from local militias who believe women shouldn't participate in sports, running remains her only source of hope in a chaotic world. At 17, her dream comes true when she represents Somalia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She returns home with even greater ambition for the 2012 London Games—but soon finds that circumstances have changed, and the path toward fulfilling her dreams is not what she had anticipated.

Yasemin ŞAMDERELIYasemin Şamdereli (b. 1973, Dortmund) is a director and screenwriter. Her graduation film at HFF Munich, Kismet (2000), won the Short Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. She went on to direct the TV films Alles Getürkt! (2002) and Ich Chef, du nix (2007). Her feature debut, Almanya – Willkommen in Deutschland (2011), premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and won two German Film Awards. Her most recent film, Samia, premiered at the Tribeca Festival.
