SYNOPSIS

Jane Campion, the first woman to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes, for The Piano, has carved out a unique place for herself for 40 years in the traditionally masculine pantheon of cinema. For the first time, the film draws the portrait of Jane, unapologetically subjective and offbeat, very much mirroring her own trailblazing journey in cinema and life.

PROGRAM NOTE

Jane Campion holds a special place for cinephiles and filmmakers who lived through the 1990s. She became the first female director to win the Palme d'Or at the conservative Cannes Film Festival for The Piano (1993) and continues to create prolific works. Her recent film, The Power of the Dog (2021), received Silver Lion for Best Director at the 78th Venice IFF and Best Director at the 94th Academy Awards. Campion consistently depicted women protagonists-except for recent works-desires of women who challenge, compromise, and fail against patriarchal society. Like her characters, she intertwines her artistic individuality with her unique cinematic world, all while juggling her role as a working mother in the male-dominated film industry. Julie Bertuccelli reviews Campion's life and films chronologically from her childhood to the present. However, she does not reconstruct Campion's cinematic universe from the director's perspective and voice and avoids undue praise from authoritative figures. Bertuccelli effectively utilizes Campion's past interviews and cine-talks, extracting sincere reflections from the candid artist. The result is a profound portrayal of Campion's cinematic world, presented through her voice. [KIM Sukyun ]
