Yuncheol, who received a sculpture award in his 20s, is now an interior construction worker and single father in his 40s. His teenage daughter is a promising art student. One day, she tells him she wants to become a monk. Yuncheol had also once envisioned himself becoming a monk or priest if he failed as an artist. He feels robbed. Why can she walk the lifepath that he couldn’t?
Yuncheol, who is in the midst of a secluded island of life, endures the two waves that have hit his daily life. He is a 40-year-old divorcée who wishes to live the life of a sculptor, and his daughter Yi-yeon has quit art and decided to become a Buddhist nun. And Yeongji, who has permeated into Yuncheol’s life, shows him new love.
All characters calmly face hardships while falling into the yoke of anguish. In the film, two religious spaces overlap and images of faith are linked. Yi-yeon and Yeongji, strugglingly staying in each religious space, are connected, and a deep relationship is formed between characters who do not have many encounters. The characters feel a delicate moment in the process of meeting and parting. A Lonely Island in the Distant Sea settles within the shaking screen while confirming each other’s existence and allows the audience to embrace the farewell. [Pingu, Cinefemme]
