SYNOPSIS

Synopsis This film is an homage to Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, a visionary Korean-American avant-garde artist who was born under the fire of Korean war and immigrated to San Francisco in 1963. She got murdered in Manhattan three days after her first book, Dictee was published.

Program Note
This film is an experimental homage to Theresa Hak Kyung Cha (1951~1982), a Korean-American diaspora avant-garde artist, and to her work Dictee. She was born in Busan during the Korean War, and immigrated to San Francisco when she was 12 years old. She went on to study comparative literature and arts, but died shortly after the publication of her first book Dictee, at the age of 31. This film calls to remembrance the life of Cha and projects on the screen the critical problems she dealt with, including diaspora, feminism, and post-colonialism on multiple levels. Further, by unraveling the issues of history and identity, it invites the audience to give careful consideration to the reenactment of experience through visual media like film and photography, and to expression through bi- or multi-lingual writing and speaking.
