SYNOPSIS

Audience Awards, Grand Jury Awards / Outfest 2009

 Synopsis
Sadie¡¯s art is her photography. Nico¡¯s art is her life. Together they explore Britain¡¯s 60¡¯s mod culture of music, fashion, drugs and vintage scooters in contemporary Los Angeles. Sadie observes the world through the lens of her 35 mm camera, but everything changes when she meets Nico, the new ¡°mod¡± girl who was born with Milroy¡¯s disease that causes her to have abnormal swelling in her foot. Nico doesn¡¯t hide her disability, in fact she loves the spotlight. Sadie is drawn into Nico¡¯s thrilling world of aesthetics where Sadie learns about herself and who she really is.

Program Note
Sadie is a tomboy who wears a loose flannel shirt and always carries around a 35mm Nikon camera to try and communicate with the world, but ¡®rocks¡¯ are all she sees. Classmates who are impossible to communicate with, her perfectly ideal family, and even her only friend who tries desperately to fit in with the in crowd all just confuse Sadie. One day, Sadie¡¯s world of ¡®rocks¡¯ lets in Nicko, a ¡®chic girl¡¯ who is the epitome of British Mod culture from the 60¡¯s. Through Nicko, Sadie absorbs the A to Zs of 1960¡¯s British Mod culture ranging from films, music, fashion, hair, makeup, cigarettes, alcohol, parties, drugs, sex, and vintage scooters at fast speed and sets off on a journey to find a totally different side of herself. As she encounters Mod culture and falls in love with Nicko, Sadie, who has been holding a camera with no ¡®point of view¡¯ or ¡®lens,¡¯ becomes the center of a viewpoint toward the world and changes enough to point the lens at herself. Britain and Mod culture in the 1960¡¯s defined who you were by the group you were associated with. The fact that this film took place in L.A., California makes it all the more interesting. British ¡®Mods¡¯ are reenacted in California, a place that could be considered the home sweet home of the ¡®rocker¡¯ as seen in the mini road trip that cute vintage scooters, instead of Harley Davidsons, take in Los Angeles.
