SYNOPSIS

In factories on fashion district in San Pedro, California, labors are supplied by illegal female immigrants from South America. ¡®Forever 21¡¯, a national retailer of young women¡¯s clothes, also have a factory here. Run by a Korean entrepreneur, ¡®Forever 21¡¯is filed a lawsuit against its unfair trade by female laborers who didn¡¯t get paid USD200, a weekly wage for 12 hour labor a day. The film records 3 year-legal struggles of three Latina immigrant laborers Maria, Lupe and Maura, activists from L.A.¡¯s Garment Worker Center and legal professionals. After a longtime fight for unpaid wage, workers finally won the battle and they realize the absolute necessity of ¡®unite and conquer¡¯for the future and Lupe eventually becomes an activist in anti-Globalization strike. The scene where Lupe gives a speech on the pyramid of power to other workers is quite impressive workers are the majority in the capitalist structure but at the lowest level of the pyramid. If they escape from it with unity, however, the capitalist structure could not be sustained any longer made in la is a rare documentary to how what the anti-globalization movement led by women is like.     Born in Madrid, Carracedo is director and producer of the documentary, Made in L.A. Funded by ITVS, POV and the Sundance Documentary Fund, the film has received critical acclaim and international awards, including a Henry Hampton Award and a Special Mention of the Jury at the Valladolid International Film Festival. Her previous documentary on Tijuana as a border town Welcome, a Docu-Journey of Impressions received the Sterling Award for Best Short Documentary at Silverdocs Documentary Festival and screened in numerous national and international festivals.
