SYNOPSIS


She made it to the swimming pool passing a loose traffic system but was told by the janitor that she couldn¡¯t use the pool because there was no hot water. When she decides to dive into the cold water anyway, ignoring the prohibition, she faces a different obstacle, besides the sense of coldness. Laila Pakalnina, who¡¯s become a household name on the Latvian film scene, carefully observes sur/ realistic situations in daily life and continues her documentary and feature works in her own intellectual style.     She was born in 1962 in Latvia and graduated in film direction from the Moscow Film Institute (VGIK). She has directed nearly 20 documentaries, shorts and features. Pakalnina appeared on the international scene when two of her documentaries were chosen for Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival. Her first feature film, The Shoe (1998) revealed Pakalnina¡¯s sophisticated images, neorealistic charm, reconstructive ¡°documentary¡± approach and irony.
