Emma makes a living by selling books on a street stall. As she forgets her customers’ orders from time to time, the wall of her tiny room is filled with sticky notes to remind her what she needs to do. One day she gets a letter from one of her old friends, and it propels her to take a trip right away. With tons of news reports on hot weather and all sorts of incidents broadcast on the radio, her short memory gets worse. This film is a road movie, and asks the audience to identify the features of ‘realistic’ sensibilities conjured up between cinema and the real world. The non-nation-specific ambiguity infused through the wardrobes, plot setting, and art direction on the shooting location could be from either character’s perspective. It may originate from the way lots of motives and materials, taken off from the films of Hong Kong and Taiwan in the 1990s are presented in this film. While audiences try to deal with this ambiguity, the camerawork deepens it further through certain techniques that frame the characters in particular ways, and although there are plenty of close ups it is challenging to grasp the emotional state of the protagonists. It is a cinematic sensation that exists somewhere between the screen and reality. [HWANG Miyojo]
